True Stories

Make a positive difference in the lives of older adultsMr. M. is a remarkable 92-year-old gentleman that has lived in one of our retirement communities since 1996.  While he was diagnosed with colon cancer several years ago, he receives treatment and does remarkably well.  He is an active member of community.  Like many others, he lives on a fixed monthly income that has not kept pace with the escalating costs of living.  While his family provides assistance, their resources are used to purchase his medications and a few other expenses, but their resources have been stretched as far as possible.  Mr. M. loves his home and the wonderful friends he has made but he reached a point where he needed financial assistance.  True to our mission, St. Andrew's was committed to helping Mr. M. remain in his home.  We met with Mr. M. and his family and arranged to provide assistance with his senior housing.

Bob is an 80-year-old gentleman who lives alone.  He has multiple health problems and in recent years has frequently been rushed to the emergency room.  A St. Andrew's care manager identified Bob's need for extra help in the home and now makes sure he eats properly and takes his medication.  Since these home services started, Bob has not needed to go to the emergency room again.

Doris is a 77-year-old female who has Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.  Doris has poor short-term memory.  She is somewhat unsteady on her feet and gets disoriented.  At night, she becomes confused and wanders through the house.  Her daughter works during the day so it is difficult for her to stay up during the night.  With extra help during the night from St. Andrew's, Doris' daughter can get her rest while Doris is carefully monitored and kept safe.

Mr. R. and Ms. M. both receive supportive care services from St. Andrew's At-Home Services.  Because of their limited incomes, these two clients sometimes do not have enough medications to last until the end of the month.  With St. Andrew's help, they can purchase enough medications to get them through each month.

Ralph is 100 years old and used to be afraid to live in his own apartment.  With the help of his local church and St. Andrew's, Ralph qualified for subsidized housing and now he is an active and happy senior living in one of St. Andrew's communities.  He is always volunteering his skills and talents to help others in the housing complex.  As Ralph says, " For the first time in my life, I feel safe."

"For the first time in my life, I feel safe."
