Healthy Habits for 2008
Brought to you by the Caring Workplace

By: Sheila Longsdon, MSW, Eldercare Specialist

The New Year has arrived and many of us have made resolutions that tend to be quickly forgotten.

Instead of concentrating on impossible resolutions, why not focus on healthy habits that can be implemented in our everyday lives. Look to good vision and eye health to help maintain one of our most valuable senses. Practicing even a few healthy habits can reduce the risk of eye conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration:

UV Eye Protection

  • Wear sunglasses with 99 –100% UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays.

  • Fruits and Vegetables — A Beneficial Menu for Eyes

  • Eat fruits and vegetables; they contain antioxidants that absorb harmful UV rays in the eye and improve the overall health of the eye.

Weight Maintenance

Maintain a healthy weight; overweight or obesity increases risk of decreased blood flow to the eyes which can increase the risk of cataracts.

Examining the Situation

Get eye exams regularly; the American Optometric Association recommends that adults 61 and older have them annually. Without these visits there is an increased risk of undetected cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Be Aware of Being At Risk

Adults who are at higher risk of developing eye diseases and conditions include: African Americans, those who smoke; those with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of eye disease. If you fit into one of these categories, be particularly vigilant about your eyesight and eye health.

Resolve to take good care of your eyes and 2008 is bound to be a happy new year.
